Will the US offshore wind market finally take off?
Vineyard Wind has recently received the Record of Decision from the U.S. Department of the Interior – Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the final major step in the federal review process for the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the USA. Vineyard Wind 1 is an 800MW project located 15 miles (ca 24 kilometres) off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and approval of the project is an important step towards achieving the Biden administration’s goal of bringing 30GW of offshore wind online by 2030.

Is green hydrogen the holy grail or just hype?
Many companies and governments nowadays are looking into green hydrogen to speed up the energy transition. Based on all the plans it seems that green hydrogen presents a ‘huge’ opportunity and might play a prominent role in decarbonising the economy such as for heavy-duty transport, aviation, shipping or in industrial processes such as steel and chemicals production.

Will 2021 be the year of a green economic recovery?
Most of the world is still in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, coping with the second wave and/or heading into a third wave. Although vaccination programmes have started, 2021 will still be a year of fighting the current pandemic. But 2020 was not all bad news.

Will the wind energy industry for once not be hard hit by a global crisis?
The world is still experiencing a health and economic crisis due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, since many countries have succeeded in controlling the virus (for now), lots of measures have been eased and some have been lifted. The economic effect that the lockdowns have had on (local) economies is devastating. It is expected that in the first half of 2020 the European economy will decrease by 10%, and although a recovery is expected in the second half of 2020, a decrease of 5% is expected for the year. In the short term the wind industry is also affected by, for example, supply chain issues, closure of manufacturing facilities, and delays in project execution. However, in the long term the wind industry (and other renewables) might dodge the bullet this time.
