The California Energy Commission (CEC) has adopted a comprehensive strategic plan to guide the development of offshore wind energy, aiming for 25,000 MW of capacity by 2045, enough to power 25 million homes.
This initiative advances California's clean energy goals, promising substantial economic benefits and job creation.
California currently relies on nearly 35,000 MW of renewable resources but will need an additional 148,000 MW by 2045. Offshore wind is particularly suited to California’s coast due to strong, consistent winds and the ability to generate electricity when solar power is not available.
The strategic plan includes recommendations for marine impacts, workforce development, and impacts on Native American tribes, the U.S. Department of Defense, and fisheries. It underscores responsible development to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect public health and the environment.
Following the plan's adoption, the CEC will continue consultations with various stakeholders and advance the recommendations and strategies outlined.
