The Madrid preparatory conference attended by 51 Governments agreed on the Statutes of an International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
IRENA will promote the utilisation of renewable energy such as wind energy by providing accurate information about these key technologies. The signing of the founding treaty is scheduled for 26 January 2009 in Bonn, Germany. WWEA highly welcomes these steps as overdue in order to balance the international debate which is still dominated too much by the vested interests of the opponents of renewable energy downplaying the renewable energy potentials and benefits.
