The yaw drive is an important part of a wind turbine as it keeps the rotor facing into the wind as the wind direction changes. Yaw drive gearboxes tend to face mechanical failure because of overload (for example, under extreme wind conditions).
Wind turbine shutdowns and potential power production losses are the consequence. As a solution to this issue, the new overload protection technology designed and developed by NGC automatically disconnects the yaw drives from the load after an overload occurs. This prevents the transmission of the overload to all parts and components, including the electric motor, the gearbox, and the slewing bearing, thus protecting the entire yaw system from possible damage.
