TNO, in partnership with TU Delft and Robohouse, has developed a prototype robot that installs sensors deep inside wind turbine blades, helping to improve predictive maintenance and reduce downtime.
As turbine blades grow longer and more flexible, monitoring their internal condition becomes increasingly important. The compact robot automates the installation of strain gauges within the blade structure, handling surface preparation, precise sensor placement, and adhesion.
The system, tested in early 2025 inside a 32-metre Vestas V66 blade, is designed to be operated by a technician at the blade root and includes a camera for potential remote or autonomous use. The project’s next phase involves validation in a real turbine environment, aiming to support longer turbine life and more accurate maintenance scheduling.
