Topwind has installed a prototype of the Bat Protection System (BPS). The system, developed by Topwind, detects the presence and activities of bats near wind turbines using a high-quality ultrasonic receiver.
Bats navigate by emitting and receiving ultrasonic signals. Due to their high frequency the signals are inaudible to the human ear. Thanks to the high quality ultrasonic receiver the BPS is able to hear bat sounds. It observes, filters out noise, and records the signals, making the signals audible and visible to humans. Recorded signals are stored such analyses on bat activity can be performed. At the request of a customer Topwind developed the BPS. After a period of close collaboration between ecologists, bat experts, and the engineers of Topwind the first BPS was installed. The Bat Protection System can be delivered standalone or can be integrated with the Topwind’s Ice Prevention System.
