An example of turbine damage caused by lightning courtesy Wind Power LabWind Power Lab (WPL) has unveiled a lightning surveillance tool designed to mitigate damages to wind farms by enabling early detection of potential risks.

The new Lightning Analysis Service, named LASSIE, operates on a cloud-based platform, offering non-intrusive monitoring without the need for turbine installation. According to WPL, repairs can be identified earlier than anticipated with the use of this technology-driven monitoring tool.Developed by WPL, LASSIE incorporates an algorithm that integrates multiple data points from weather reporting systems. It also adheres to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards for electrotechnology compliance, coupled with Wind Power Lab's expertise in rotor blade analysis.
