The UK and California have agreed to strengthen cooperation on clean energy investment. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new Memorandum of Understanding aimed at supporting the transition to clean power and addressing climate and environmental challenges. The agreement establishes a framework to encourage innovation, scale up clean energy technologies and improve links between businesses and research institutions in both economies.
It is intended to strengthen connections between the UK clean energy sector and the Californian market, with a focus on export opportunities, skilled employment and business development.
The partnership includes cooperation in the following areas:
- Clean energy technologies, including offshore wind and low-carbon hydrogen
- Energy storage, including long-duration technologies
- Grid modernisation, reliability and efficiency
- Decarbonisation of buildings
- Research, innovation and academic cooperation, including artificial intelligence, quantum technology and fusion
The agreement builds on previous Memoranda of Understanding between the UK and 11 other US states, including Washington and Florida.
