Following the launch of the 20-metre and 24-metre WindWings in September 2024, BAR Technologies and CM Energy Tech (CMET) have signed a collaboration agreement to begin production of these models. The new designs are expected to achieve average fuel savings of up to 0.7 tonnes per WindWing per day on global shipping routes.
The 20-metre-24-metre WindWings are built to enhance fuel efficiency and adaptability in shipping. Their patented three-element rigid wingsail uses passive boundary layer control, eliminating the need for suction fans or spinning mechanisms and reducing energy consumption. Each unit weighs under 30 tonnes and requires minimal deck reinforcement, making them suitable for installation on the forecastle or side deck.
Both foldable and non-foldable versions are available, allowing the wings to be adjusted for easier navigation during pilotage and port operations. They operate entirely on electric power, simplifying installation and maintenance. A self-feathering mechanism enables them to withstand true wind speeds of up to 100 knots.
