November saw the anniversary of their fifth year with no gearbox failures. For both the D8 series and the D6 1250 series of turbines it has not been necessary to fix or replace a gearbox. A total of 103 units of D6 1250 turbines and 39 units of D8 series turbines have been installed. 100% gearbox reliability has been achieved from the first D8 2000 (no. 1) installed March 2002 to the present. This achievement has been recognised by the insurance brokers Gerd Augustin GmbH and Power Solutions GmbH. The DeWind D8 and D6 series are some of the few wind turbines to have obtained 100% gearbox reliability. EU Energy Wind is confident that they will maintain this success and their record for reliability will continue in the new D8.2 turbine.

ITI Energy is investing up to £9.3 million in a large-scale battery system being jointly developed with innovative US-based businesses, Applied Intellectual Capital (AIC) and Electrochemical Design Associates (EDA), and Lotus Engineering in Norwich, England. California-based company EDA will relocate key staff across to Scotland, in the process setting up a new Scottish company Plurion Limited. ITI Energy estimates the potential market for large-scale battery storage to be worth US$ 1 billion by 2020.

SKF WindCon 2.0 is an expanded version of the company’s wind turbine monitoring system. The new system features WebCon, SKF developed software enabling internet access with the following benefits:
· access to the monitored data via Internet Explorer
· no special software needed to analyse turbine machinery
· no need for a user developed and maintained database (the database is managed and maintained by the SKF system)
· machine trends can be checked daily by many field personnel, instead of a single machine park supervisor
· the system offers Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) data and trend analysis that can be acted upon by field personnel.

SKF WindCon 2.0 can monitor an unlimited number of turbines and turbine data points. The system can monitor any of the following:
· unbalanced condition of the propeller blades
· misalignment
· shaft deflections
· mechanical looseness
· bearing condition
· gear damage
· generator rotor/stator problems
· resonance problems
· poor lubrication conditions.
SKF WindCon 2.0 is certified by Germanischer Lloyd and approved by Allianz.

SKF has developed a new single bearing solution, which removes the main shaft, saving weight and cost in the nacelle of wind turbines and protecting the gearbox from the rotor loads. Intended for the new generation of large wind turbines, the new double row taper roller bearing (DRTRB) with segmented PEEK (a high grade engineering polymer material; polyetheretherkeytone) cage gives operational reliability, together with low friction. In addition, the PEEK cage and other design features enable increased maintenance intervals. The new DRTRB has two rows of tapered rollers arranged ‘back to back’, giving high load carrying capacity with high stiffness. The bearing is pre-loaded and the gearbox is loaded just by pure torque load and protected from the rotor loads, as the bearing supports the rotor and drive train. The large diameter of the bearing makes it strong enough to withstand yaw and tilt moments. The PEEK cage is segmented in order to make it more flexible and minimise contact forces and friction. Codenamed ‘Nautilus’, the new bearing can be used in both geared and gearless wind turbine designs.

The new SKF pitch and yaw bearings have special surface treatments to protect against corrosion, and false-brinelling is limited by specially selected grease. A new, automatic lubrication system that distributes small amounts of grease to all lubrication points for up to six months, has been fitted, and this reduces maintenance costs and lubricant consumption. After six months only the central reservoir needs refilling. A patented seal solution avoids grease leakage and water ingress, and withstands ring deformations under load as well as internal grease overpressure. In addition, the bearings have a two-layer coating that provides long-lasting corrosion protection even in severe weather conditions. The SKF range of pitch and yaw slewing bearings are available in different designs: single row and double row four point contact ball bearings. Pitch bearings can be supplied with or without integrated gearing. Yaw bearings can be supplied with an integrated gear ring, enabling direct drive and eliminating the need for an additional gear ring.
