Suzlon Group has announced its S97–2.1MW wind turbine has been upgraded to handle higher wind speeds in a 60 hertz (Hz) version for application in the North American market.

The S97, which is a IEC Class II machine, will achieve higher average wind speed operation through modifications to the controller software and use of enhanced blade fiberglass materials that further improve blade strength, durability, and stiffness.  The S97 will be available for delivery in December 2013. Customers can expect a cut-in speed of 3.5 meters per second (m/s), cut-out speed of 25 m/s and rated wind speed of 12 m/s. It will be available in 60 Hz version for now, but considerations are being made by Suzlon to have it available in the 50 Hz markets as well.
