Friday August 3, 2007, the blades of a GE 1.5MW wind turbine caught the Berkshire breeze and began generating electricity to directly satisfy Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort's electrical demands.
The resort is the first business of its kind in North America to produce its own electricity from a wind turbine. Sustainable Energy Developments Inc. (SED), based in Ontario, NY, acted as the project manager for the project from the initial feasibility study to construction management during the installation. The 1.5MW wind turbine will produce an average of 5,000 kWh per day in August and up to 20,000 kWh per day in the windier fall and winter months. The wind turbine is expected to reduce the resorts electricity costs by more than 50% each year.
