One of the measuring buoys at its location in the North Sea courtesy Fraunhofer IWES Peter RohdeFraunhofer IWES has installed two lidar measuring buoys in the North Sea on behalf of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. A twelve-month campaign will gather data for the preliminary meteorological assessment of area N-9.5 within the wider area development plan.

The buoys have been operating since early September at positions in the German Bight near the Dutch border, transmitting information on wind speeds, directions, waves, and currents. The meteorological and oceanographic data will support the planning, design, and modelling of future offshore wind farms.
