Mammoet has completed an electric-powered transport of a monopile during the onshore marshalling of components for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm in Denmark. The pilot was carried out with Van Oord, Ørsted and PGE at the Port of Rønne. Mammoet and Van Oord had agreed to test electric transport of a monopile under real project conditions, using Baltica 2 as the test project.
Mammoet received, marshalled and loaded out 111 monopiles, each weighing 1,700 tonnes. For the pilot, one monopile was transported over a distance of 815 metres.
The transport used three sets of 26 axle lines of Mammoet Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs), fitted with the company's XXL Monopile Handling System. Three electric power pack units (ePPUs) supplied the power.
According to Mammoet, data from the pilot indicates that the system could complete the site moves and SPMT lifts required to move a monopile from storage to the quayside on a single charge.
Using data from the transport pilot, Mammoet calculated that an MTC1600 could perform a single monopile lift using one ePPU charge without disrupting on-site activities.
