Freja Offshore, a joint venture between Hexicon and Mainstream Renewable Power, has received a Natura 2000 permit for the Mareld offshore wind farm, located around 40 kilometres west of Lysekil in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone.
The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland granted the permit, which is one of three required for the wind farm’s construction. The next step is to secure government approval under the Act on the Swedish Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Continental Shelf Act (KSL). Once operational, Mareld is expected to generate up to 12 TWh of electricity annually.
Natura 2000 is an EU-wide network of protected areas aimed at preserving biodiversity. The permit confirms that the project can proceed while respecting the high natural values of the Bratten marine ecosystem, which borders the development area.
