Arcadis and Pondera Consult will conduct a study on the best possible methods to transport energy from future large-scale offshore wind farms to the Dutch mainland. The wind farms expected to be developed up to 2030 and together with existing wind farms, are estimated to provide up to 40 per cent of the Netherlands’s total power consumption (11.5GW).
In the study, which was ordered by the Dutch government, the companies will explore different ways to connect future offshore wind farms to the national power grid, in collaboration with TenneT (TSO). The study considers environmental effects, costs, technical feasibility, ecology and whether the different options are future-proof. The companies will also look into different ways of relieving the energy grid when offshore wind production is (too) high. Possible scenarios include the electrification of onshore Dutch industry, conversion to hydrogen and other ways of storing electricity.
