RWE U.S. Offshore has reached a settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior to resolve claims against the U.S. government and relinquish its offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California and Louisiana.
The company invested more than $1 billion in acquiring the leases and advancing the development of the projects. Following the settlement, RWE will receive $1.22 billion and has concluded that there is no viable path to permit the projects in the USA in the foreseeable future.
RWE said the agreement will allow it to reallocate capital to other energy investments in the USA.
Among these investments is a $900 million financial commitment to acquire an indirect 16% stake in the Louisiana LNG Project, with the proceeds supporting construction of the terminal. The company has also signed a $300 million turbine reservation agreement to support the expansion of its flexible power generation business and is developing a pipeline of 15 natural gas peaking projects across the USA.
In addition, RWE Americas plans to invest around €17 billion in the USA over the next six years. The company aims to increase its generation capacity from approximately 13 GW across 27 states to 22 GW by 2031.
