Nova Scotia, in collaboration with federal partners, is advancing plans for offshore wind energy development. Following a regional assessment, the province has proposed five areas for designation: French Bank, Middle Bank, Sable Island Bank, Sydney Bight, and Western/Emerald Bank. These areas were selected after further review of an initial list of eight potential sites.
Once the areas are designated later this year, the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator will oversee a licensing process for wind farm development. This process will involve selecting specific parcels within the designated areas for development. Offshore wind in Nova Scotia is jointly managed by federal and provincial governments under the Canada-Nova Scotia accord acts. The planning and decision-making process includes ongoing discussions with the Mi’kmaq, fishers, developers, communities, and other stakeholders. This approach ensures that offshore wind development takes place with consideration for environmental, economic, and community interests.
