In a joint statement, members of the Offshore Coalition for Environment and Nature (OCEaN) highlighted how the EU’s biodiversity protection and restoration targets can align with the expansion of offshore wind and grid infrastructure.
To support this vision, OCEaN has launched a comprehensive report titled ‘Avoidance and Minimisation of Environmental Impacts from Offshore Wind & Grid’. This report provides an overview of existing measures to reduce environmental impacts, identifies knowledge gaps, and offers recommendations to enhance the deployment of offshore wind and grid infrastructure for better environmental outcomes. Additionally, OCEaN introduced an Energy and Nature database aimed at inspiring project developers, governments, and permitting authorities.
OCEaN – North & Baltic Seas is also urging European policymakers to address ongoing challenges and effectively implement crucial policy frameworks. These include the Maritime Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and Maritime Spatial Planning Directive (MSPD), the Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy (ORES) and the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA), as well as the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the EU Nature Restoration Law, and the Birds and Habitats Directives.
The coalition stressed the need for increased regional cooperation, involving all relevant stakeholders, including civil society, to strengthen sea-basin fora. OCEaN members believe that such collaborative efforts are essential to achieve a balanced approach that promotes both renewable energy development and the protection of marine biodiversity.
