More than a decade ago, Vestas approached TTTech Industrial looking for a solution to simplify the internal control systems in their turbines. The company developed a scalable distributed control system (DCS) for Vestas.
With this scalable distributed control system, Vestas is able to reuse more than 70% of the turbine architecture when developing new turbine models. The DCS enables the connection of multiple control devices inside the wind turbine, with safety-critical and non-safety-critical functions being able to run next to each other on a specially developed controller. Data from multiple controllers is transmitted on a single network cable with Deterministic Ethernet technology. The DCS is now also integrated in the Vestas’ V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine for offshore environments, which was released in November 2021.
