Werkzaamheden Veerse Meer 1Prysmian and Deme have started installing high-voltage cables on the bed of Lake Veere in Zeeland, the Netherlands, for grid operator TenneT. The cables will form part of the connections linking future offshore wind farms to the mainland. Installation is being carried out using a specially developed system mounted on a pontoon and is expected to continue until spring 2027.

The cables are part of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore grid connection projects, which will transport electricity from future wind farms in the North Sea to shore. The cables will come ashore at Banjaardstrand in Kamperland, pass beneath the Veerse Gatdam and cross Lake Veere towards Borssele.

In Borssele, two onshore converter stations are being built to convert the electricity from 525 kilovolts (kV) direct current to 380 kV alternating current for transmission through TenneT’s national high-voltage grid.

The cables are manufactured at Prysmian’s factory in Finland. Each connection comprises four cables in Lake Veere: two high-voltage cables, one spare cable and one fibre-optic cable. Each cable has a diameter of 16 centimetres and weighs approximately 67 kilograms per metre.
