The 23rd and final caisson for the Princess Elisabeth Island has been installed 45 km off the Belgian coast in the North Sea, completing the foundation works for the energy island. The works were carried out by TM Edison, a consortium including Deme and Jan de Nul, on behalf of Elia Transmission Belgium. The 23 foundation elements form the protective outer shell of the future island.
The Princess Elisabeth Island is being developed by Elia Transmission Belgium in the Belgian North Sea. It will connect the second Belgian offshore wind zone and could also support a future energy link with the United Kingdom.
The project will now move to the next phase, with sand used to reclaim the area within the caisson structure. Cable connections to the mainland are planned for 2027 and 2028, followed by installation of the island’s electrical infrastructure from 2029. Completion is scheduled for 2031, when the island is expected to be ready to transmit electricity to shore.
