Siemens Energy and Neptun Smulders Offshore Renewables (NSORe) have been awarded a contract by 50Hertz to deliver a new grid connection system for offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The connection, known as North Sea Connector 2, will enable up to 2 GW of offshore wind capacity to be transmitted to shore.
The offshore converter platform will be fabricated by NSORe, a joint venture between Neptun Werft, part of the Meyer Werft Group, and Belgian construction company Smulders, primarily at the Neptun Werft shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde.
Siemens Energy will supply the platform's electrical transmission technology, much of which will be manufactured at its facilities in Germany. The company has also secured a long-term service agreement covering maintenance, information technology services and on-call support.
Siemens Energy expects to fully book the order in its next fiscal year, which begins on 1 October 2026.
