Trianel Windpark Borkum I has prequalified to participate in the balancing energy market with around 70 MW of capacity and has been supplying negative secondary balancing power since July 2026. Marketing started successfully on 22 July 2026. The offshore wind farm in the North Sea can therefore contribute to grid stability in addition to generating electricity. Balancing energy helps maintain the balance between electricity generation and consumption and keeps the grid frequency stable at 50 hertz.
For negative secondary balancing power, the output of generating facilities is automatically reduced within five minutes following a request from the transmission system operator. The balancing service is enabled by a dedicated remote-control infrastructure that transmits requests from transmission system operators to the wind farm in real time and automatically adjusts its output. A redundant system architecture is designed to meet the technical requirements of the balancing energy market.
The wind farm has been operating for more than ten years and has generated more than 6.59 billion kWh of electricity. Its participation in the balancing market adds another function to the project and provides an additional route for integrating renewable generation into the wider energy system.
The prequalification also allows the wind farm to participate in another electricity market alongside existing power purchase agreement arrangements.
