Two large clean energy projects have been completed on the Shetland Islands, enabling around 500,000 homes to be powered by renewable energy for the first time. SSE Renewables' Viking Wind Farm and SSEN Transmission's 260-kilometre subsea link to the GB electricity grid have both been completed.
The Viking Wind Farm features 103 Vestas turbines with a total capacity of 443 MW, expected to generate 1.8 TWh annually. The subsea transmission link connects Shetland to the mainland, providing energy security and supporting the islands' transition to clean energy. These projects, representing over £1 billion in investment, are part of a larger £20.5 billion commitment to UK clean energy infrastructure. During construction, the projects supported 650 jobs and contributed £125 million to the local Shetland economy. The Viking Community Fund, worth over £72 million, will continue to support local initiatives.
