Vattenfall and steel producer Salzgitter have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for fossil-free electricity from the Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm, to be used for steel production from 2028.
The agreement provides Salzgitter with 75 MW of connected load from the Nordlicht 1 wind farm over a 15-year period. Located 85 kilometres north of the island of Borkum, Nordlicht 1 is currently under development and is expected to be completed and connected to the grid in 2028. Salzgitter will purchase around 300 gigawatt hours of electricity per year for its steelmaking processes. The Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm will feature 68 wind turbines and will have a total capacity of 980 MW. Vattenfall holds a 51 per cent stake in Nordlicht 1, while BASF holds 49 per cent.
