The Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy has announced the declaration of an area in the Bass Strait Region off the coast of Northern Tasmania for offshore renewable energy, including offshore wind.
This was formalised through the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure (Declared Area OEI-02-2024) Declaration 2024. The declared area spans 7,100 km², extending from Burnie in the west to Bridport in the east. The Bass Strait region is one of six priority areas identified for offshore wind development in Australian Commonwealth waters. The decision followed consultations with Australian and Tasmanian government agencies.
