Following a wind energy study in 2023, which revealed Trinidad and Tobago’s potential for wind energy generation, the EU has partnered with stakeholders from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Planning and Development to develop a wind energy programme for Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago is actively pursuing renewable energy development, in line with its Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, aiming for a 30 percent renewable energy target by 2030. The Trinidad and Tobago Government has approved the Wind Resource Assessment Programme to evaluate the feasibility of wind generation for utility-scale power.
The Wind Resource Assessment Programme, launched in November, will continue for the next 12-15 months. The EU's support for the programme includes:
- Installing wind measurement devices (LiDARs) at Galeota Port and Waterloo, Orange Valley, identified as potential sites for wind farms.
- Contributing two renewable energy experts to train personnel and support the newly established Wind Energy Steering Committee in developing a Wind Energy Action Plan.
- Reaching out to European companies with expertise and technology in the renewable energy sector to invest in Trinidad and Tobago.
- Inviting Trinidad and Tobago to participate in a ‘Wind Energy Study Tour’ to Denmark in 2025.
