RenewableUK’s latest Offshore Wind EnergyPulse Insights report reveals that the global capacity of fully operational offshore wind farms has reached 80.9GW, up from 70.2GW a year ago—an increase of 15%. Two markets accounted for 63% of this new capacity: China added 6.9GW, while the Netherlands contributed 1.7GW.
This growth is expected to continue, with the global offshore wind project pipeline increasing from 1,461 to 1,555 projects over the past year. The number of countries engaged in the sector has also risen from 41 to 44, with Indonesia, Chile, and Malta confirming their first offshore wind projects in 2024.
The project pipeline includes offshore wind farms at all stages of development, from fully operational to under construction, consented, in the planning system, or in early development.
China remains the global leader, with a pipeline of 247GW across 437 projects. The UK holds second place with 96GW across 123 projects, followed by the US (79GW), Germany (68GW), and Sweden (55GW).
