Dutch wind-assisted ship propulsion company Econowind is entering the deepsea market with the launch of its 5-series VentoFoil, a larger steel suction wing system designed for oceangoing vessels. The 30-metre model is based on the same principles as the company’s 3-series wing.
The 5-series is aimed at deepsea owners and operators seeking to reduce fuel consumption and meet regulatory requirements. The first unit is scheduled for installation on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping this summer.
To support its expansion into deepsea shipping, Econowind is organising production in the Far East, closer to major shipbuilding centres. The approach is intended to facilitate integration of the larger VentoFoil units into newbuild vessels.
