Azerbaijan has launched an offshore wind project using Vaisala’s Dual Scanning Lidar (DSL) to evaluate wind energy potential in the Caspian Sea. DSL observes offshore locations from several positions, offering highly accurate insights into wind conditions.
This configuration involves two WindCube Scan lidars measuring the same point in space at different beam angles to provide spatial resolution and reduce uncertainties. With more reliable data, higher horizontal and vertical certainty, and increased project efficiency and flexibility, Azerbaijani energy authorities can better understand wind conditions in complex or turbulent flows. Recent analysis suggests that Azerbaijan’s offshore wind energy potential is about 157 GW, a total exceeding the current power capacity of the transcontinental country's power plants.
