The Republic of Kenya has joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), becoming the first African country to become part of the initiative. Kenya already generates nearly 90% of its electricity from renewable sources and is seeking to expand its offshore wind potential.
Estimates cited in relation to the country’s resource base indicate around 68 GW of potential floating offshore wind capacity, particularly suited to deeper coastal waters. The move aligns with Kenya’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan, launched in November 2024, which sets out pathways towards net-zero emissions by 2050 across the power, transport, industry and cooking sectors. Through its participation in GOWA, Kenya will engage with a global network of governments, developers, investors and civil society organisations focused on scaling offshore wind deployment. Floating offshore wind technology is expected to be a key area of cooperation and knowledge exchange, given its suitability for deeper offshore conditions.
