The California Energy Commission (CEC) has released their initial Offshore Wind report, with aims of 3,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2030, 10,000 to 15,000 MW by 2045, and a possibility of 20,000 MW by 2050, given appropriate technology breakthroughs.
California has a lot of potential for offshore wind. According to the paper Offshore Wind for America by the Environment California Research & Policy Center, California's offshore wind technical potential — 391.9 TWh — is enough to supply more than 1.5 times the amount of power needed by Californians in 2019. According to the same analysis, full electrification of the economy, including transportation, heating, and cooling, could cover 52 percent of California's electricity needs in 2050.
