Ofgem has announced plans to speed up the process for connecting cheaper, cleaner power to the UK electricity grid. A new system, which could be in place by spring 2025, would replace the current first-come, first-served approach that has left some clean energy and storage projects waiting a decade or more for grid access.
Under the proposals, projects that can be operational quickly and are essential to meeting the government’s 2030 clean power targets will be prioritised. The new system would fast-track "ready" and "needed" projects, with accelerated connection offers issued by the end of the year and the first projects coming online from 2026.
The Government’s Clean Power Action Plan requires grid capacity to double within five years, demanding increased investment, faster infrastructure development, and large-scale deployment of renewable technology. Ofgem is inviting feedback on the proposals, with the consultation open until Friday, 14 March 2025.
