Portugal has commenced the preparatory process for its first auction of licences to construct wind farms off the Atlantic coast by inviting companies to submit non-binding declarations of interest by 14 November 2023.
During the initial phase, companies are required to outline the maritime areas they intend to target, their experience in developing wind energy projects, whether on land or at sea, the financing model, among other details. The government has designated the capacity available in the auction, to be initiated by year-end, at 2 GW across three areas situated off the country's Atlantic coast. The floating wind farms will be situated in deep waters where winds are stronger and more consistent. Portugal intends to conduct subsequent auctions to reach a total of 10 GW by 2030.
