Swedish Wind Centre 2.0 has secured funding from the Swedish Energy Agency and participating partners for five years of research into wind power. Chalmers University of Technology and Uppsala University will jointly lead the national competence centre, bringing researchers and industry together. The centre will focus on wind power in a range of environments, from forested landscapes on land to complex marine conditions in the Baltic Sea and off Sweden’s west coast.
Building on the existing Swedish Wind Centre, the new centre will receive more than SEK 100 million in total funding over five years. Uppsala University will host the centre, with leadership shared between the two universities. The centre will be led by Stefan Ivanell, Professor of Wind Energy at Uppsala University, and Sara Fogelström, Research Project Manager at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology.
Swedish Wind Centre 2.0 brings together nine universities and 13 partners from industry, regional organisations and public authorities. Participants include Energiforsk, Fu-Gen, OX2, Rabbalshede Kraft, Region Gotland, RES, SR Energy, Statkraft, Svenska kraftnät, Vasa Vind, Vattenfall, Vestas and Västra Götaland Region.
Previously, funding from participating companies and Västra Götaland Region limited the centre’s ability to undertake longer-term research projects. Support from the Swedish Energy Agency is expected to provide greater scope for research over extended periods and for projects spanning multiple research fields.
Preparatory work will begin in autumn 2026, with the centre scheduled to launch on 1 January 2027. The first research projects are expected to start during 2027.
