Up to 10 GW of offshore wind capacity could be enabled following UK government plans to upgrade air defence radar systems. The initiative follows coordination with industry to address interference issues between radar infrastructure and offshore wind farms.
The government has procured specially designed air defence radars intended to reduce anomalies caused by wind turbines. These systems are expected to support both offshore wind deployment and the continued operation of national air defence capabilities.
Installation of the new radars is scheduled to begin in early 2029. The systems are designed to maintain detection and identification of activity within UK airspace while operating alongside offshore wind farms without interference.
The upgrade is intended to remove a long-standing constraint on offshore wind development, while ensuring airspace monitoring and defence functions remain effective.
