LD Armateurs has launched Wind of Ocean, the first of two service operation vessels (SOVs) being built for Vattenfall. The vessel was launched at the ZPMC shipyard in China and will now undergo outfitting, systems integration and sea trials ahead of its scheduled delivery in 2027.

Following the keel-laying ceremony earlier this year, the launch marks the next stage of the construction programme. Once delivered, Wind of Ocean will operate at the DanTysk and Sandbank offshore wind farms in the North Sea, supporting maintenance activities and the transfer of personnel and equipment to the turbines.

The vessel has an overall length of 90 metres and a beam of 19.60 metres and will accommodate up to 96 people, including crew and offshore technicians.

Developed in partnership with SALT Ship Design of Norway, Wind of Ocean features a hybrid-electric propulsion system combining diesel generators with a battery energy storage system.

The vessel has a double-ended design, with a symmetrical hull and four identical azimuth thrusters. According to LD Armateurs, this configuration is intended to improve manoeuvrability and dynamic positioning performance while simplifying maintenance. The design also aims to reduce noise and vibration in the accommodation areas.

Wind of Ocean is equipped with a motion-compensated gangway for personnel transfer.

Following the launch, construction will continue with the installation of propulsion equipment, electrical systems, accommodation areas and other onboard systems before sea trials.
