Stillstrom by Maersk has been selected by the European Union’s Innovation Fund to develop the first commercial offshore charger for electric service vessels operating at wind farms. The project involves building and installing an 8 MW Offshore eCharger, enabling fully electric service operation vessels (eSOVs) to recharge at offshore wind farms.
Service operation vessel activities typically account for 15–20% of the total greenhouse gas emissions over the lifecycle of an offshore wind farm. Replacing marine gas oil with electricity supplied directly by the wind farm could substantially reduce these emissions.
Stillstrom has been developing offshore power and charging solutions since 2019.
The project is one of 77 initiatives selected for support under the Innovation Fund, which backs low-carbon technologies across sectors including renewable energy, carbon capture and transport. The selected projects will share around €3.4 billion in funding from revenues generated by the EU Emissions Trading System.
