Mingyang Smart Energy has completed the first Mingyang Tianqi MCD5.0 MW ultra-low-wind-speed wind turbine at its production base in Guizhou, China. The MCD5.0 MW uses Mingyang's new medium-speed compact semi-direct-drive technology and has been developed for areas with low wind speeds. The turbine has a cut-in wind speed of 2.5 m/s and a swept area of 7.74 m²/kW.
The drivetrain has been redesigned to reduce the number of components by 60%. The turbine uses a large-diameter double-row tapered main bearing and a multi-planet flexible pin design. Major components are also designed for modular removal and installation inside the nacelle, reducing the need for large lifting equipment during maintenance.
The turbine is designed for low-wind-speed sites in regions such as Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan, where lower average wind speeds can limit the economic potential of wind projects. The design also incorporates adaptations for complex conditions including mountain icing and thunderstorms.
