China Three Gorges and Goldwind have installed a 20 MW offshore wind turbine in waters off southern Fujian Province in China. The prototype is located about 30 km offshore in the Minnan sea area at a water depth of more than 40 metres.
The turbine has a rotor diameter of 300 metres, blades measuring 147 metres and a hub height of 174 metres. The unit is equipped with autonomous monitoring and control systems and integrates multiple sensors, including LiDAR wind measurement and blade-root load sensors, supported by a multidimensional early-warning system.
According to China Three Gorges, the turbine is expected to generate more than 80 GWh per year. The project is being developed under China’s National Key Research and Development Programme for renewable energy technologies.
