Ocergy and DeTect have announced the offshore deployment of the Merlin 3D Bird and Drone Detection Radar System on the Blue Oracle buoy. The radar was installed in early April and will remain operational on the buoy located 30 km east of Port la Nouvelle (France) throughout the bird migration season across the Gulf of Lyon migratory corridor.
The Merlin radar system is operating with real-time data accessible via Ocergy’s SCADA and data management platform. This is the first deployment of a bird radar on a low-cost, dedicated floating platform in a far offshore location. The project aims to validate the technical integration of the radar and buoy, gather data on European bird migration patterns, and support environmental impact assessments for offshore wind projects. It also contributes to ongoing efforts to improve scientific knowledge of avian migratory behaviour in offshore environments.
