Seawatch based bird identification and tracking at Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm Image credit Spoor and FugroFugro and Spoor, a software company focused on reducing the environmental impact of renewable energy projects, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop an artificial intelligence (AI) bird-monitoring solution for offshore wind developments.

The system uses video cameras mounted on Fugro’s Seawatch Wind Lidar and other metocean buoys to capture footage of bird activity at offshore wind farm sites. Spoor’s computer vision and AI software then analyses the footage to identify bird species. The solution has already been tested at the Hywind Tampen offshore wind farm in the Norwegian North Sea.
