Ocean Winds, in partnership with Banque des Territoires, has completed the installation of 32 Biohuts on one of the three floaters of the Éoliennes flottantes du golfe du Lion (EFGL) pilot wind farm. The Biohuts—developed by French ecological engineering company Ecocean—are artificial nursery habitats designed to support marine life by mimicking natural coastal environments.
Each Biohut consists of a steel cage system, with an inner layer containing oyster shells to encourage food chain development and an outer layer offering shelter for small fish from predators. The design aims to create a safe, resource-rich environment for juvenile fish in offshore waters. The lessons learned from this ecological integration will inform similar efforts in future projects.
Beginning in May 2025, the three EFGL floaters will be towed for the final wind turbine assembly. The installation of the turbines, 16 kilometres off the French Mediterranean coast, is scheduled for summer 2025.
