Amprion plans to construct a converter station for the BalWin1 project in Bohmte's "Am Wehsand" area. After extensive site selection and evaluation, two potential sites were excluded for conservation reasons.
The remaining sites, including "Am Wehsand," were deemed spatially and environmentally suitable. Amprion has chosen "Am Wehsand" as the preferred location and intends to apply for approval by mid-2025. The site's advantage lies in its potential to utilise existing infrastructure for connection. Amprion has been engaging with the public since 2022 and pledges continued updates on the project's progress. The BalWin1 offshore grid connection system will employ direct current technology to transport large energy volumes efficiently over long distances. It aims to transmit 2,000MW of offshore wind energy. The projects will involve laying underground cables and will connect to grid connection points in Wehrendorf (BalWin1) and Westerkappeln (BalWin2).
