EDP has started testing a battery energy storage system at its Las Lomillas hybrid renewable energy site in Cuenca, Spain. The facility combines wind, solar and battery storage technologies through a single grid connection, enabling more efficient use of the existing energy infrastructure.
The site has a combined installed capacity of 122 MW, consisting of a 49.5 MW wind farm, a 36 MW solar plant commissioned in 2025 and a 36 MW / 72 MWh battery energy storage system. The three technologies share a single grid connection with an export capacity of approximately 50 MW, enabling more efficient use of the existing network infrastructure.
An energy management system coordinates the three technologies, using algorithms under the supervision of EDP’s energy management teams and control centre. The system determines whether electricity generated by the wind farm and solar plant should be exported directly to the grid, stored in the battery system or, when appropriate, whether the batteries should be charged from the grid for later discharge.
The project received funding of up to €6.2 million through the Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) Support Programme for Innovative Energy Storage Projects Hybridised with Renewable Electricity Generation Facilities, under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union's NextGenerationEU programme.
