JGC Japan Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation have signed an agreement to explore collaboration on the detailed design, manufacture, and delivery of floating structural components for the floating offshore wind (FOW) power generation sector.
The two companies will investigate the potential for working together in the following key areas to establish a supply chain for floater components:
- Detailed design of floater components based on floating foundation designs
- Development of partnerships with steel and shipbuilding manufacturers for the production of floater components, including order placement and manufacturing management
- Transportation of floater components to base ports for offshore wind power generation
In 2018, the JGC Group established a dedicated department to enter the offshore wind power generation sector. Sumitomo Corporation is an investor in offshore wind power and has invested in companies that own heavy lift vessels (Netherlands) and those that operate vessels transporting engineers and equipment to wind turbines under construction (Norway). Sumitomo Corporation also leads a consortium for a power generation project off the coast of Enoshima Island in Saikai, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is discussing with Oshima Shipbuilding, a member of the Sumitomo Corporation Group, the use of its large-scale shipbuilding facilities and mass production technology for the manufacture of floating structures.
