Surana Industries Limited of Chennai, India, a producer of thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bar steel and stainless steel products and components, is turning to wind energy to help power its factories. The company has selected GE Energy’s wind turbine technology for a 12MW wind farm to be located in the village of Radhapuram in the state of Tamilnadu, South India. GE is supplying eight of its 1.5MW wind turbines for the project, which is scheduled for commissioning in July 2005 and is expected to generate approximately 36 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. GE is also providing technical advisory services for the erection and commissioning of the turbines, and operation and maintenance services for five years.

REpower Systems AG has signed a supply agreement with its Chinese licence partner, Dongfang Steam Turbine Works (DFSTW), for their first joint project in China. By the end of the year, seven wind energy turbines of the 1.5MW class are to be erected in Chinese Rongcheng (Shandong Province).

A recent grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) will help test new turbine tower materials and erection methods that could revolutionise the wind energy industry. Wind Tower Composites (WT), in partnership with SeaWest Wind Power Inc, has been selected as one of three technology teams awarded a grant for the CEC’s ‘Expanded Wind Regime Turbine Technology and Intermittency Management Demonstration’ project solicitation. Wind Tower Composites, a Heber City company, has received US$ 1.5 million to demonstrate its composite wind turbine tower at a site in California in December 2005.

Zoltek has clinched an order from the wind turbine blade industry with an agreement to supply Spain’s Fiberblade. The US company’s latest success is valued at up to US$ 75 million (€ 58 million) over the first three years of the contract. The company is now engaged in a three-stage expansion programme involving re-start of an idled line in Texas and investment in its operations in Hungary, where Zoltek is planning to raise capacity of carbon fibre to 9,000 tonnes a year by 2007. Zoltek won an US$ 80–100 million (€ 62–77 million) order to supply market leader Vestas with carbon fibre in December. The fibre is employed with a resin matrix, usually epoxy, generating a big and growing market for suppliers to the business which is expanding at nearly 20% a year.
