RWE Supply & Trading, the energy trading arm of RWE, is experiencing high demand for short-term green power contracts from its business customers. In response, the company launched a "Green Tender" in to procure additional green power. The tender is open until 16 August 2024, during which RWE aims to secure up to 3 terawatt-hours of green electricity for delivery in 2025 and 2026.
The tender targets operators of wind and solar parks who offer their plants for direct marketing, especially those no longer receiving EEG subsidies. Interested power producers can submit offers directly to RWE, which will evaluate them based on the provided data. If the offered price is acceptable, RWE will purchase the quantities for customers who need short-term supply contracts. This green electricity will complement RWE’s renewable energy portfolio, which primarily markets its wind and photovoltaic (PV) plants through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
The PPA market is booming, with the number of PPA deals in Germany nearly doubling last year, according to a dena market analysis. This trend continues into 2024, driven by large companies seeking sustainable electricity and regulatory requirements for "ecological contributions" tied to electricity price compensation policies introduced in September 2022.
