Ilsenburger Grobblech, a subsidiary of Salzgitter, has signed a contract with Siemens Gamesa to supply approximately 25,000 tonnes of heavy plates for the construction of 36 wind towers. These towers, known as the Siemens Gamesa GreenerTower, are designed with reduced carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions.

The Siemens Gamesa GreenerTower has been part of the company’s product portfolio since 2024 and can be used for both onshore and offshore wind turbines. The first deployment of these towers will be at the Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea, off the west coast of Jutland. The wind farm, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, will have a planned capacity exceeding 1,000 MW.

The production of heavy plates for the GreenerTower requires around 30,000 tonnes of primary material. Some of these slabs are produced with low CO2eq emissions at Peiner Träger GmbH, using scrap-based electric steel and renewable energy. The remaining slabs are sourced from European suppliers through Salzgitter Mannesmann International, ensuring similarly low CO2eq emissions.

The heavy plates for the 36 towers will be supplied by Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH and Mannesmann Grobblech GmbH. Deliveries to wind tower manufacturers Windar in Spain and Welcon in Denmark are scheduled between March and October 2025.
